Different colored rings represent different continents. The top right ring in the Olympic Rings in the Opening Ceremony didn’t fully open like the others did. It stayed curled up.
The ring was the one representing America. Viewers were left to wonder: was this planned deliberately or it was a mistake.
Whatever the reason might have been, during the closing ceremony dancers formed a recreation of the Olympics rings and one group initially stayed tiny, to mimic the mishap.
“Ceremony producer Konstantin Ernst was philosophical about the mishap. ‘Among five rings, one of them didn’t open. And you know, Zen Buddhists have an idea: if you have an ideally polished ball, you have to leave a scratch, to get an idea of how ideally it was polished,’ he said.”
