Located in the south-west of Western Siberia, the city of Omsk is the place to avoid, according to some of its residents. When comparing the wages and cost of living in Omsk and other major cities in Russia – the ratio is not in favor of Omsk. Salaries are clearly below the average in Russia, the cost of goods is also lower, but not enough. A characteristic feature of Omsk residents is the sad look on their faces.
In 2009, the popular internet meme “Omsk bird” (Winged Doom) and the catch phrase “Do not try to leave Omsk!” were created. They still seem to be haunting the Russian social media. Let’s see why.

In late 2013, “ISS Art Media” studio presented to the public a documentary film “Do not try to leave Omsk!” addressing social issue and convincing young people not to move to Moscow in search of a better life. Instead, people should stay and try to make their city a better and more interesting place to live.

Funny post with a great message at the end. We should better the places we are, not leave them for better places.
Yes, but when and if possible at all…I left my native place (not Russian) for a better one and I´m glad I did. One can only “better” a place if all inhabitants agree with being more honest…hard worker and not to have any children.
I kind of get what you mean. Yes, it is difficult to make a positive impact for a community if the community itself does not agree that the impact you are making is a positive one. I am also all about working hard, but I’d like to one day have children of my own. As to honesty, it is the only way to make positive things happen.
Shut up John
Shut Up John is a great message.
Cool. That’s a good way to attract people to be a part of your community. Good luck making generating traffic like that…

I have a dear friend who was born raised and lives in Omsk. She seems to think that the people of Omsk have gotten the city that they deserve. That every bit of it is incredibly dirty, including air that is badly polluted, and according to her “doesn’t seem to contain enough oxygen”. Where educated people have accepted a very low standard of conduct with each other, and where the rare foriegn visitor can expect to have an experience of true Russian rudeness. However she says that there are enough good people and things there to lead a reasonably happy life, but she says that she would rather live in the big cities of the Ukraine.

I am an American living in Kazakhstan, I just spent the weekend in Omsk and I loved it. It’s a beautiful city, great architecture and museums, lots of cafes and bars. The women are gorgeous, not one complaint
